Who We Are

In August 2009, during her morning preps while in high school, Janet wrote the words “Core of Humanity” in her notebook. It was an idea for an organization that would help send the children from her village to school. Though she did not yet know how to bring this vision to life, she carried the ambition in her heart.

In 2013, while still a university student, Janet received a smartphone as a gift from a friend. She used it to take pictures of the children in her village, her friends siblings and others who came to visit her during school holidays. These photographs served as a reminder of the promise she had made to them: that she would work tirelessly in her education and ensure that they, too, would have the opportunity to attend high school and college one day.

Janet successfully completed her education, and in 2020, she began the process of formalizing her dream by registering Core of Humanity as a nonprofit organization. Today, Core of Humanity is a registered NGO in Kenya, dedicated to providing education and support to children and families in some of the country’s most impoverished and underserved regions.

On the organization’s website, www.coreofhumanity.org, visitors can view some of the photographs taken in 2013 of the young children Janet made a promise to, alongside current photographs of those same children taken in 2023, now students sponsored by Core of Humanity. Today, Core of Humanity is not only supporting students from Janet’s village but also many students from some of the poorest and hardest-to-reach parts of Kenya.

Currently, Core of Humanity is sponsoring 110 students across various educational levels, including primary school, high school, and college/university. The organization has also provided one-off educational grants to 99 students, enabling them to pursue their education.
